Making phonemic awareness, FUNemic awareness
How can we make this fun? I know as a parent, that as soon as I try to do school work with my own child (who absolutely adores school) it became stressful, difficult, and one of us often ends up in tears. I've often had people say to me, "oh, I'm sure your children are so advanced with you both being teachers". What they don't understand is that while we may be our teachers, to our kids we are Mom and Dad, and our kids want to do school work with us, and much as any other child wants to do school work with their parents.
How do we make it fun???
Well, one way is by using candy with segmenting. What is segmenting?
Segmenting is breaking apart a word into its individual sounds.
I lay out 3 pieces of candy (or more depending on the number of sounds in a word) and I have the child slide up each piece as they make the sound.
Example: Say the sounds in cap. /c/ *slides a piece of candy /a/ *slides another /p/ slides the last one.

**As your child gets better at this you may be able to have them tell you how many pieces of candy they need.
They of course get to eat it when they are done!
